Color of the Year: Greenery

Spring is here and we're all excited to bring some life back into our homes! Pantone's color of the year, Greenery, is the perfect color to do this with! The Pantone Color Institute says it "satisfies our growing desire to rejuvenate" and "symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature", and I completely agree! The color is so inspiring to me and I love the thought of it being a focal point in a space.

Greenery is so fun and easy to work with, the options are endless! We loved playing with some idea boards with it, going in completely different directions with them! They show how versatile the color is, you can definitely use your imagination with this one!!

Spring Fever!!

The pollen has announced its arrival (quite loudly) and the rain is on its way; spring is in full swing! It's time to put away the cold of winter and freshen up your home for spring! These are some idea favorites for our spring fever that we can't wait to use in our upcoming staging projects along with some tips on how to bring that fresh feel into your home!

1 Bring in the bright!! Spring is all about flowers blooming and inviting those beautiful colors back into the world, so your home
should do the same! As you can see our favorites board is full of bright colors!! Nothing is more fun!

2 Add some fun to your tables and counter tops! Bring in those fresh cut flowers and introduce fun trays, pots, and trinkets! They make all the difference and add a touch of personality to each space in your home.

3 Give your bedroom some attention! Flip the mattress, tuck away the heavy comforter, bring in some fun, light spreads and throws, and throw in some greenery here and there! You'll feel like a brand new person walking into that light and airy space, but if you're really looking for a change, buying a new mattress is a great way to upgrade your space. Check out Leesa for some great mattresses.

4 Rotate your art pieces! You should rotate your art at least every 6 months- bring in the light pieces with fun, pastel colors for spring! It'll freshen up your space and make you feel good about a little change.

Who Doesn't Love Custom?

My team recently took a field trip to see the work of Alexis Dold, starter of Studio Circle Square, and we were blown away! Alexis built his first piece of furniture when he was 10 years old and his love and talent for the subject has blossomed ever since. He works primarily with wood and steel, focusing on how to unify the contrasting aesthetic possibilities that naturally separate these mediums. The handcrafted work is absolutely stunning! Each piece has its own unique qualities, guaranteeing you your very own custom piece. I love love love the look of live edge wood and antique steel, gorgeous!

Alexis will be working with us to create a beautiful custom mantel and drink ledge in a pool room for one of our clients. We are so excited to continue this process with him and show off his amazing work!

These are some of the amazing pieces he's currently working on that we were able to see when visiting his studio. The live edge bench is definitely a favorite of mine, and I am at a loss for words over those awesome tree stumps he's working with!

Boutique Hotels

Boutique Hotels are popping up rapidly among urban cities and making a statement in the hotel industry. They are often designed with a theme/stylish manner that reflects the location it is in, giving them a very personal touch where visitors are made to feel part of the experience rather than just a passive consumer. Shaping the identity of an up-and-coming area is key to creating a successful boutique hotel and I love the fun, uniqueness of them! They are one of a kind gems! My goal in the next five years is to design boutique hotels and I love to gain inspiration from the ones popping up around the globe!

The Graduate Hotel is a wonderful example that I stayed in last year in Charlottesville, Virginia! The design takes you back to the glory days of college with an added twist of luxury. It is so fun and ties together so many unique patterns and textures you can't help but smile when you're in their spaces!

The Meridian is an Urbanica Hotel that just opened this year in Miami, Florida. The style is urban, contemporary and artsy, drawing from local craftsmanship and creativity. I absolutely LOVE the welcome desk made of vintage luggage and the walls painted by a local artist to incorporate Miami's Wynwood Art District.

Another beautiful example is the Barbuda Belle which combines luxurious beach bungalow get-away with fun boutique-style flair! The spaces feel very romantic, warm and natural, making you feel at home yet holding all of the qualities to ensure relaxation and rest. I love this combination of natural materials and warm, dramatic lighting.

Marble Accents

A little piece of information about me: I LOVE marble! It is glamorous, elegant, and oh so beautiful. Now unfortunately we can't all have an entire wall of marble in our homes (may or may not be an ultimate dream of mine); however, we absolutely can add some of that luxury in small doses! Marble accent pieces were a major trend in 2016 and are continuing into 2017; they were huge at the 2016 NY NOW showcase. Marble adds so much sophistication to a space and each piece has its own unique colors and veining.

As if the beauty doesn't sell itself enough, it's great on your wallet too! Using the stone in small touches rather than entire counter tops or bathtubs gives the same effect, but at a much lower cost.

Eleni Dinnerware Collection, $136 for set, thepicketfence.com                                   Raw Edge Onyx Bowl, $365, modishstore.com

Marble Wall Clock, $142.15; etsy.com

These are some pieces we are currently loving and using in a couple of our projects!

Girls Rule, Boys Drool!

In one of our current projects we are taking on the task of designing two little girls rooms! We have been having so much fun with this part of the project, because it is not often that we get the opportunity to design spaces for kids. As a team we have been gathering lots of inspiration for our designs and we couldn't be more excited to put it all together and show the girls their new bedrooms! Take a look at some of the designs that we love and inspired us, and maybe you'll gain a little inspiration yourself.

Our New Habit Challenge!

How much time would you say you spend sitting during the day? 20-30%? That doesn't sound too bad right? In fact, the average adult spends 50-70% of his day sitting! Research shows that the longer you sit the more likely you are to develop heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and obesity. We decided that we did not like those numbers and odds, so here at Sarah Cain Design we will be taking team walks during our lunch break a few times a week!

Taking these short walk breaks are not only good for your health, but your productivity and mood, too! Walking through a park or some sort of green space in your area can lessen your brain fatigue and frustration and will bring so much more positivity into your day. Getting some sun on your skin after being inside for long period of time will boost your productivity to tackle the rest of your work day.

We have our sneakers packed and can't wait to feel all of these positive effects on our spirits!

How to Create a Luxury Hotel Bathroom at Home

Everyone loves going to a beautiful hotel and drowning their sorrows away in a gorgeous spa bathtub in a bathroom with everything you need to escape your worries. But who says you can't have this at home, too? Here are some simple ways to make your bathroom feel relaxing and elegant without having to whisk away to a fancy hotel.

1. Think Soft and Comfortable!

One of the most important components in creating a luxury bathroom is splurging in the fluffy bathroom elements: towels! Both the look and feeling of fluffy new towels will go a long way and choosing a neutral color is key to making the space feel spa-like; show them off rather than shoving them in a cabinet.

2. Lighting

Lighting has a HUGE effect on the appearance and aesthetic of a room- both the fixture and the light emitted. Small recessed lights above the bathtub with dimming switches will give you the perfect amount of light and will allow you to choose how bright you would like the space. Mood lighting is everything when you are trying to relax! If you want to go all out, adding a beautiful chandelier in the center of the room will really bring out the elegance. Think classic with a little bit of sparkle.

3. Engage the Senses

You got the soft towels and the low lights, now its time to bring out the scents! Candles are the ultimate relaxing tool. Fill your bathroom with your favorite scent as you lay down for a warm bath. Throw in some flowers to liven up the room, and if you aren't into candles potpourri and incense also work wonderfully.

4. Take a Seat

We spend more time in our bathrooms than we think and the only seat we're provided with is the toilet...not a real seat. If you have the space, adding extra seating will make the room feel much more upscale and elegant. A tufted ottoman, elegant chair, or even a simplistic stool are beautiful options that look classy and are very functional.

5. Get Artsy

Bring some personality into your bathroom space! Add a large statement piece of artwork, create a gallery wall, or bring in a fun rug that can introduce some color. It's important to bring in your sense of style and personality into every room of the house including your bathroom, so don't neglect it!

6. Invest in a Bathtub Tray

A wooden bathtub tray is both functional and super trendy! It holds your book, candles, loofah, your glass of wine, and looks beautiful while doing it! Plus, you can totally make this a DIY project and create whatever look you want for your space.

7. Switch Out Your Shower Head

Get rid of your old shower head and invest in a new rainfall shower head! They're softer and so luxurious; every time you take a shower it'll feel like you're in a spa.

Make Your Closet an Experience!

Lately I have been on the lookout for great closet designs that really give you an experience while picking out your outfit and showcasing your belongings! We have been wanting to redo our own closet at home and I've also been very interested in getting more involved in closet design with my clients. To me, the closet is a very important space in the home, but it is often neglected or forgotten about when it comes to design. If you think about it, you spend a lot of time in there! Everyday you pick out an outfit that you love to make yourself feel good; so wouldn't you want to show off those items that make you feel good and love the place you're in while doing it?

The key to accomplishing this type of design is creating an experience that makes you feel excited! It's all about replicating that boutique environment that you love when you go shopping. Not only will it change the way you feel about picking out your outfit in the morning, but it will change the way you buy as well! When you are showing of your clothes in a clean, organized manner you want everything to look the best it can be!

The first thing to consider when doing a closet design is color, pattern, and texture! Your clothes usually will already offer a lot of color into the room so it is totally okay to just go neutral, and it comes out just as beautiful!

Go simple with all white and touches of gold! Absolutely stunning!

However, if you want to add a little spunk into your space using a pretty wall paper as a backdrop, using a colored trim around all of the casework, or bringing a color or pattern in through accent elements will definitely bring the space to life and make it feel much more exciting!

Add a texture or pattern on the floor and bring in a matching color in some beautiful drapes!

Use a gorgeous wall covering to give your space some personality!

For a bold look pick a contrasting color to add a trim to all of your casework! This look is classic and brings a lot of depth to your space.

When it comes to closet design, lighting is definitely competing for the most important element! Bringing a sufficient amount of light into the space is so important so that you can see everything clearly and get an appropriate understanding for the way an outfit looks.

LED étagères...c est un étagère et un tasseau déporté a l' intérieur duquel est collé un ruban Led.:

Lighting strips under shelves and cabinets are game changers! Not only does it give a sense of sophistication to the space but it will highlight your clothes and accessories so much better!

Use a combination of lighting techniques such as recessed can lights, pendants, sconces, and even natural light if you have that ability! Bringing in as much light as possible while using beautiful fixtures will make all the difference! Have a separate switch for each type of lighting and add dimmers so you are able to control the space as you see fit.

Bring in a beautiful chandelier to add a focal point to the room! Doing so will amp up the boutique feel and make it feel so much more luxurious.

Organization is so so important in closet design. There are several routes you can take with your organization casework including cabinets, drawer units, cubbie holes, hanging space, etc. Do your research and figure out what types of organization are right for your style and personal life; the possibilities are endless!

Utilize your space appropriately by showcasing the proper clothes for the season while hiding away the unneeded items.

Invest in a jewelry organizer; these things will change your life! They will force you to keep all of your jewelry organized and together and it will be so much easier to see everything so you can choose what will go great with your outfit for that night on the town!

An angled shoe display is another organizing technique that will be a great investment! These babies will keep all of shoes together and organized while showing off their looks so you can choose accordingly.

Lastly, and probably the most fun part of closet design is adding the details! The little things are always what really pull a design together; so bring out your personality and have some fun with it!

The hardware used for all of your built ins can make a huge statement! Go classy with gold and crystal, or make it fun with a bright color or unique pattern!

If you have the room, add some seating! It will make your experience much more comfortable and will allow you to spend more time in there getting ready rather than your bedroom or bathroom. Build it into one of your casework pieces for a beautiful two-in-one!

Mirrors are so important for the perfect closet space; and not only for their practicality! Bring in some seriously beautiful detail with a decorative mirror, and go large if you can! Mirrors will open up small spaces and make your closet feel truly luxurious.

Red Rules!!

Has putting the Christmas decorations away got you feeling a little empty? Bring that beautiful red back into your life to brighten up the mood! Red can be a tricky color to use in the home, but when it's done right it looks so stunning! Also, believe it or not it goes so well with so many color palettes. The best way to succeed in this design challenge is to apply the color in accents! Little bursts of red will add so much life into the space and will make you happy just looking at it. Switch out those old knobs, paint your front door, and add some flowers and cranberries to your flower arrangement and you've nailed it! So bold and so beautiful!
